I’ve loved this film forever, sustaining that devotion through several waves of popular derision (“it’s cringe, it’s pretentious, it’s blah blah blah”), and it makes me angry that acclaimed playwright Shawn is mainly known for his role in The Princess Bride.
Maybe it gets so much derision because if you describe it to people it does sound like what a person would imagine a 'highbrow' film would be if they had never seen one...
I like those plays of Shawn that I've read too (never seen one performed). But let me confess (a) that I like The Princess Bride, and (b) that I first heard his name as the voice of Rex the Dinosaur in Toy Story...
A favorite film that has never been distributed in Japan… I love it (and André Gregory autobiography is a fun read… )
